A Video My Daughter Shot

I’m releasing my first new song in 14 years.
When I started thinking about making a video to go along with it, I decided instead of shooting a music video I would use some footage my 14-year-old daughter, Ada, shot on my phone one evening while Megan and I were hanging out by the fire.
It seemed appropriate.
Ada was a brand new baby the last time I released new music. Now here she is, 14 years old, becoming this wonderful young woman. I honestly don’t know where those years went.
One of the reasons I walked away from music and touring was because I wanted to be home. I wanted to be a husband and a dad and actually spend my life with them. That decision cost me a lot, but gave me more. It allowed me to be a part of so many more of their days than I would have been otherwise. The ordinary moments. Meals around the table. Ball games. Riding in the car. Working around the farm. Sitting by a fire.
And still, it has flown by.
That’s really what this song is about.
At some point you realize the life you love is passing right before your eyes at a speed you can’t control. We can’t slow it down. We can’t make it stop. Our kids don't stay little. Even a lasting marriage can't last forever. Everything in this life has an end. We can’t add another day to our lives or the lives of the people we love.
But we can pay attention. We can be grateful for it while we’re living it.
Before I posted the video, I wanted Megan and Ada’s blessing. I always try to do that when something I share involves Meg or the kids. This was Ada’s footage and Meg was in it, so I wanted them both to be comfortable with me putting it out into the world.
Meg watched it, thought it was sweet, and gave me a thumbs up.
Then I called Ada down to my office.
She watched for a minute and said, “I like it, but it’s really shaky. If I would’ve known you were gonna use it for something like this, I wouldn’t have made it so shaky.”
I told her that was actually what I liked about it. She wasn’t trying to make a music video. She was just filming her mom and dad laughing and hanging out around a fire. That’s why it feels like our life and fits this song.
I told her if she’d rather me not use it though, I wouldn’t.
She said, “No, it’s okay. You can use it. It’s not like a lot of people are gonna see it anyway.”
Humbled by a 14-year-old. 😂
She didn’t mean anything by it. We both laughed.
I asked her if she liked the song and the video. She said she did. She thought her mom and I were cute laughing together by the fire.
I told her, “Then that’s all that matters.”
Her. Her brother. Her mom. They’re the people I’m making this for.
And for anybody else who happens to find it, whether that’s today or years from now. Whether that's one person, or “a lot of people."
It’s shaky. It’s simple. It's real.
