The Story Behind The Song
“The Kinda Love We Never Wanna End”. *scroll down for acoustic performance
In the past year…
I lost several friends.
I lost my sister.
Too many times in my life have I received those shocking phone calls that remind you how fragile life is.
“oh if i could slow it down, find a way to go back around, yeah you know I wish somehow I could”
Everything in this life has an end.
Some of those come with open arms. Some welcome the end, even long for it.
Others fight it with every ounce of their being.
Today, someone will take their last breath while staring up at the heavens praying for God to take them away from this existence.
Today, someone will take their last breath while staring up at the heavens praying for God to let them stay longer.
“not that I would change a single thing. I'd do it all the exact same way. You and me and the life we've made is good.”
In the past year…
I have had several friends whose marriages ended.
It’s complicated. Nuanced. It’s never one thing or one person’s fault, I guess. I don’t know.
I’ve heard both sides of the same story, and they don’t seem to be the same story at all—not in the same book, not even in the same language.
A man’s (and woman’s) ways are right in their own eyes, and you’ve a better chance of keeping the sun from setting than changing someone who doesn’t believe they have anything to change.
Today, someone is ending their relationship.
Today, I am wishing ours never had to end.
"Every day, people fall out of love. It fades away for some… but they’re not us.'
I was sitting at my kitchen table with a guitar, staring out at the cows one evening, pondering life, as I often do. These thoughts led to the first verse and chorus of this song. But the second verse? I was struggling to work it out.
I told Meg I was gonna take a break from it and run to Tractor Supply, check some things off my to-do list. I came back with a bag of feed for the cows—and this second verse:
“Oh it's so bittersweet
to have more than we ever dreamed…
One day, one of us will leave too soon,
while the other is left behind
to tell a story of the greatest kind—
about a love that lasted a lifetime through.”
That’s what this song is about.
All things in this life come to an end. Some ends are welcomed. And then there’s the rarest kind of love—the kind you hold onto, the kind that carries you through, the kind you never want to end.
That's the kind of love I'm in. The kind I'm committed to growing. The kind of love I fight for and will write about, if I happen to be the one left to tell the story.

The Kinda Love We Never Wanna End
Verse 1
If only I could slow it down
Find a way to go back around
Yeah, you know I wish somehow I could
Not that I would change a single thing
I’d do it all the exact same way
You and me and the life we’ve made is good.
Chorus
Every day people fall out of love
It fades away for some, but they’re not us
How lucky are we to find ourselves in
The kinda love we never wanna end?
Verse 2
oh it's so bittersweet
To have more than we ever dreamed
One day one of us will leave too soon
While the other is left behind
To tell a story of the greatest kind
About a love that lasted a lifetime through.
(Repeat Chorus)
Bridge
I’m not the kind to make promises lightly
But you can count on me to love you forever.
(Repeat Chorus)
